Meta’s AI bet is also a bet on flexibility. Bloomberg reported on Oct 22 that Meta had about $825B in future lease and contract commitments, up from nearly $700B disclosed in July. The figure brings a question to the AI trade: how much room does Meta retain if demand, technology or financing conditions change? The commitments include: · $355.7B in operating and finance leases not yet included on the balance sheet · $454.5B in noncancelable short- and long-term contracts · Up to $14.7B in cloud capacity purchases over five years, with some flexibility if the provider resells capacity to other customers This is not one new debt balance or $825B of cash already spent. The total combines leases, contracts and conditional capacity purchases with different timelines and terms. The obligations also extend beyond AI compute. They cover data centers, energy infrastructure, third-party cloud capacity and Reality Labs hardware. Some leases are scheduled to begin between the remainder of 2026 and 2036. A commencement date does not mean all payments are due immediately. That distinction matters because infrastructure can create both speed and rigidity. Securing capacity may help Meta deploy products faster and avoid future shortages. But the return depends on when the assets become available, how fully they are used and whether the resulting revenue or efficiency gains cover the cost. The next disclosures may be more informative than the headline total: · When will contracted capacity be delivered? · How much of it is already matched to customer demand? · Which obligations can be adjusted if technology or usage changes? · How will Meta fund the commitments alongside capex? The number is neither automatically bullish nor bearish. It is a test of execution, utilization and financial flexibility. Meta’s AI strategy will be judged not only by how much infrastructure it secures, but by how efficiently that infrastructure becomes productive business capacity. #MetaAISpendingConcerns

Meta’s Q3 revenue beat expectations. Can ad growth keep pace with AI spending? Meta reported Q3 revenue of $64.601B, up 26% YoY, and net income of $9.86B. Operating income fell 37% to $12.988B, leaving a 20% operating margin. Growth was broad: · Ad impressions rose 10% YoY · Average price per ad increased 14% · Family daily active people reached 3.64B, up 3% Ad volume and pricing both supported growth. But stronger revenue does not automatically mean stronger investment returns. Q3 included $9.89B related to Meta’s agreement with US state attorneys general. Excluding that item, Meta reported adjusted operating income of $22.88B. This is an adjustment, not the reported GAAP result. Net income rose 264% YoY, while the effective tax rate fell from 87% to 24%. That lifted the bottom line, not necessarily underlying operations. Cash flow tells another part of the story: · Operating cash flow: $32.79B · Capital expenditure, including finance-lease principal payments: $34.91B · Free cash flow: negative $2.12B Operating cash was substantial, but investment spending exceeded it under Meta’s FCF calculation. The $9.89B legal expense should not automatically be treated as cash paid during Q3. Spending remains high: · Q4 revenue guidance: $73B-$76B · Full-year capex guidance: $135B-$145B Meta raised the lower end of its capex range by $5B, while the upper end stayed unchanged. These are forecasts, not results already delivered. Our watchlist: · Advertising: can volume and pricing sustain growth? · AI economics: can investment generate measurable revenue or efficiency gains? · Margins: how does profitability develop beyond the legal adjustment? · Cash flow: can operations keep pace with capital commitments? The takeaway is mixed. Strong ad growth and heavy AI spending can coexist, but reported earnings, adjusted figures and cash generation tell different parts of the story. What will you watch first: ad demand, AI returns, or cash generation? #MetaQ3RevenueBeat
