Cosmos gave the industry a working model for app-specific chains that talk to each other through IBC. The technology has aged well. The awkward part is value capture: when thriving chains in the ecosystem run their own tokens, how much of that activity really flows back to ATOM? That question has followed the project for years and still hasn't been settled.
