Solana has activated the Alpenglow consensus upgrade on the mainnet, replacing the original TowerBFT with Votor, and replacing the Turbine block propagation protocol with Rotor.
After the upgrade, the block finalization time has been reduced from about 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds, directly decreasing transaction confirmation wait times; transaction execution and SVM remain unchanged, with modifications focused on the validator voting method, consensus mechanism, and the way consensus information is transmitted to downstream infrastructure.
The National Vulnerability Database of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology released CVE-2026-111943, pointing to the compromise of certificates from the eMudhra intermediate certificate authority.
Mozilla and Google Chrome Root Certificate Program confirmed on October 20, 2026, that the private keys of 8 eMudhra intermediate certificates can be directly derived from the public certificates. Chrome subsequently removed emSign ECC Root CA - G3 from the root certificate store. eMudhra stated that the affected certificates originated from the key generation ceremony in April 2025, and the root CA private key was not affected.
The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency finalized the first set of final rules implementing the GENIUS Act on Wednesday, covering the issuance, custody, and third-party collaboration arrangements of payment stablecoins within its jurisdiction. Both the rules and the Act will take effect on January 18, 2027.
Existing stablecoin yield and reward programs will not automatically receive grandfathering or safe harbor treatment and must undergo compliance evaluation on a case-by-case basis; issuers' reserve value must at least match the outstanding stablecoin amount and typically process redemption requests within two business days.
Anza announced that the new consensus protocol Alpenglow has been activated on the Solana mainnet, and the original TowerBFT has been officially retired.
The switch was completed at epoch 1064, with a total of 654 validators participating, taking 900 milliseconds. The final transaction confirmation time was reduced from about 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. The protocol was previously approved by proposal SIMD-0236 with 98% of the votes in favor.
The activation height for Zcash NU7 mainnet is set at block 3,543,405, which, at the current block production speed, is approximately November 5.
Any coins remaining in the old Sprout pool must be treated as a hard cutoff. After NU7, all v4 transactions will be invalid, and Sprout transfers can only be written using v4. Coins still in Sprout at the moment of activation will be permanently unspendable. To move them, you must do so yourself before activation.
Other changes: block time is reduced from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, and the 3 confirmations for exchanges and others are shortened from nearly 4 minutes to just over 1 minute. 60% of the fees per block will be removed from circulation first, and starting around February 2031, they will be returned to miners; the halving schedule remains unchanged. Additionally, limits on shielded operations per individual pool and across the entire network have been added.
The height was proposed by Sean Bowe in a PR on 10/20 and has been approved by two developers. However, as of this afternoon, the ZIP 259 deployment specification still lists it as pending, and the node software must include this height for it to be valid.
