The key metrics I’m watching:
Automotive gross margin and overall operating margin. Deliveries have been announced at 486,500 units, exceeding expectations (consensus was just over 460,000), but still slightly down year-over-year.
Automotive revenue is expected to be roughly flat or slightly down; whether the gross margin can hold near 18% and the operating margin remains pressured around 2.5% will directly determine how good the numbers look.
Energy segment at 13.7 GWh also grew but fell short of higher expectations, so this contribution is also critical.
Free cash flow and capital expenditures.
Last quarter, heavy investment and margin pressure caused EPS to miss significantly, leading to a stock price drop.
This time, Capex related to AI, Robotaxi, Optimus, and production capacity will likely remain high, so FCF may continue to be under pressure or even negative.
The market’s tolerance for "spending money to buy the future" can be seen from reactions to SpaceX and Netflix yesterday—exceeding expectations doesn’t necessarily mean a stock rise.
Guidance and narrative.
The numbers themselves may not be very surprising (revenue consensus around $28.3B, non-GAAP EPS about $0.45); more focus will be on how Musk discusses the rollout pace of Robotaxi/Cybercab, FSD progress, Optimus, and the recent comments on Tesla and SpaceX from the SpaceX earnings report.
