The era of AI is booming, and recently the US stock market's storage sector has been talked about every day, with NAND, DRAM, and HBM flying everywhere. Do you all know what they are? 😂 Here's a popular science post to boost your knowledge
1. NAND
Pronounced /nænd/, roughly like "Nan-de" in Chinese.
Full name NAND Flash, which is flash memory.
Its main feature is that data is not lost when power is off, providing persistent storage.
It's everywhere around us: SSD solid-state drives, USB drives, memory cards, the 256G or 1TB internal storage in phones—all of these use it. Large SSDs in enterprise servers also use NAND.
SanDisk's core asset is NAND; AI datasets and vector databases ultimately rely on it.
In short, it's used for storing data.
2. DRAM
Pronounced /ˈdræm/, roughly like "Dram."
Full name Dynamic Random Access Memory, which is the running memory.
All data is cleared when power is off, but it's much faster than NAND.
Corresponding products include computer RAM sticks, 12G/16G phone RAM, and server memory.
Temporary data during GPU computations is stored in DRAM.
In short, it's used for running processes; it doesn't store data long but runs fast.
3. HBM
No need to memorize the pronunciation; just say the letters one by one.
Full name High Bandwidth Memory, a high-end upgrade of DRAM.
While regular DRAM chips are laid flat on the motherboard, HBM stacks multiple layers of chips vertically, maximizing bandwidth.
High-end AI GPUs like Nvidia H100/H200 and AMD MI series come standard with HBM.
Note that HBM is not a separate category; it is still part of the DRAM family, just a high-end form.
Production mainly relies on three companies: Micron MU, Samsung, and SK Hynix.
Finally, just remember roughly: NAND is for storage, DRAM is for running processes, and HBM is a special fast-running memory for AI.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index's eight-day losing streak finally ended yesterday, Monday. It dropped 15.7% over those eight days, the longest losing streak since 2008.
On Monday, memory stocks led the charge, with Western Digital up 6%, the Nasdaq up 1 point, and the Dow Jones slightly down. The gains were all from the stocks that were hit hardest last week. (I also slightly increased my position; my strategy for US stocks has always been to buy small positions in those that fall sharply, adding more as they drop, because US stock investments are definitely upward in the long run.
Now, about that Goldman Sachs data.
In the five trading days ending last Thursday, hedge funds reduced their tech positions at the largest scale in a decade; Goldman Sachs has never seen such cuts since they started tracking.
They mostly cut during the latter half of this decline, and within a couple of days after the cuts, chip stocks rebounded. The timing is so precise, who isn't a retail investor here 🤣, but in other words, they are called those who dare to cut losses, while I stubbornly hold on.
This week, Meta, Tesla, and SpaceX will release their Q3 earnings one after another. Among the S&P companies that have reported, 85% exceeded expectations, and I have positioned slightly below expectations.

Tesla will release its earnings report after the market closes on October 21. Wall Street expects earnings per share of $0.44 and revenue around $27.8 billion for this quarter.
Car sales exceeded expectations. Deliveries this quarter reached 486,500 vehicles, over 20,000 more than market expectations. Deliveries also exceeded production by about 20,000 units, indicating a significant reduction in inventory and likely healthy cash flow. Meeting revenue targets should not be a big issue.
However, profits are another matter. Selling more cars does not necessarily mean earning more money; it could be driven by price cuts and low-interest loans.
Last quarter, revenue exceeded expectations, but profits were over 30% below estimates, mainly due to heavy spending on AI and autonomous driving. This quarter has a downside: energy storage installations were only 13.7 GWh, while the market originally expected 15.9 GWh.
Therefore, my judgment is that revenue will most likely meet or slightly exceed expectations, but whether profits will meet targets remains uncertain.
In a few days, when the earnings report is released, we can confirm:
Whether the automotive gross margin can hold around last quarter's 17% level, and whether earnings per share can reach $0.44.
As for how the stock price will ultimately move, it will depend on what Musk says about Robotaxi and robots during the conference call.
